Freemasonry in Cornwall

2013 Festival

The New Masonic Samaritan Fund was established in 1990 with the active support of United Grand Lodge of England.

The objective of the NMSF is to provide support for sick and infirm freemasons, their families and dependants who are in need. It gives relief to those petitioners demonstrating a financial need where they are otherwise unable to obtain treatment on the UK's National Health Service without undue delay or hardship. The NMSF provides support at any hospital it considers to be most appropriate to the interests and needs of the petitioner.

Although the NMSF assists with conditions that are not always life threatening, invariably the treatments for these ailments tend to have long NHS waiting times. They cause disability, pain and discomfort and have a severe effect on the petitioner’s quality of life – both young and old! Alleviating suffering in these cases is a very rewarding experience.

Applications for assistance are made as easy as possible. The petitioner has to complete an uncomplicated form which is obtainable from the Fund. Every request for help is treated as confidential.

I am delighted that the Province of Cornwall’s 2013 Festival is in aid of the New Masonic Samaritan Fund. Since it was established in 1990 the Charity has helped very many applicants within the Province and the Brethren of Cornwall now have the opportunity to repay, in some small part, that valuable support.

I urge you to complete the Standing Order Mandate and/ or Gift Aid declaration so that your support of our Festival can begin as soon as possible. Above all, I hope that we will enjoy our fundraising over the coming years and that in 2013 we shall be able to celebrate its conclusion, proud of the Province’s achievements.

At the time of the launch of the 2013 Festival the Fund is continuing to allocate over £3m each year in support of over 500 applicants. A combination of increasing demand and rising prices will mean that both the number of applicants and the cost of supporting them will be even higher by 2013.

Support from the Province of Cornwall will help the NMSF to maintain its proud boast that no qualifying applicant has ever been turned down through a lack of available funds. A number of fundraising initiatives will take place throughout the Festival. Donations can be made at any time either as one-off gifts or via regular Standing Order. As a registered Charity the Provincial Fund is able to benefit from UK tax laws.

The Gift Aid scheme allows the Fund to claim an additional 28p from the Inland Revenue for every £1 donated. If you are a tax payer please complete the Gift Aid declaration which will enable the Fund to claim the extra value of your donation at no cost to you. The most effective way to contribute to the Appeal and the Fund is to make a regular payment throughout the duration of the Festival. A regular donation of only £15 per quarter for 6 years would raise £360 for the Appeal with an additional £101.54 being reclaimed in tax.

The NMSF funds treatment for those who: Have identified medical need. Face a long wait for treatment on the NHS. Can not afford private medical care.

Support is available to: Freemasons, The wives, Partners and dependants of Freemasons, The widows, surving Partners and Dependants of deceased Freemasons.

Gift/Bankers Order available on request. Return it to your Lodge Charity Steward or to Cornwall Masonic Grand Charity at: 7 New Bridge Street Truro Cornwall TR1 2AA.

The 2013 festival was launched on 20th November 2006 at The Riviera Hotel, Newquay. Chief Executive of the NMSF Richard Douglas gave a presentation on the work and impact of the Charity, and how, by all working to one common goal we could achieve success. He was presented with a Cheque of £25,000 in value in order to launch the festival and ‘Spread the Word’

We will be setting up a page specifically for your event – but will only succeed with your input. Here you will be able to advertise your forthcoming activities and send pictures, reports etc. of recent fund raising events.

The objective of the NMSF Festival is to raise some desperately needed fund, but to have fun whilst doing so. Your success is Our success!

There are literally hundreds of ways of raising funds and awareness. From auctions to parties to dinners. Fundraising events do not have to be large to be successful . There are events for every size and type of idea. Why not try a trivia night  – great for a group of 10 – 50; or a dinner with a speaker; a silent auction is a good way to raise even more during your function. Then there is a whole world of outdoors activity from cycle rides to charity fishing competitions.

Above all enjoy the events and E-mail us at 2013festival@tiscali.co.uk
