A First For Cornwall As Postman Conquers Everest
A postman believes he is the first Cornishman to climb Mount Everest, after scaling the 8848 metres high summit. Ed Buckingham has just returned from Tibet, after his achievement which means that the 38 year old from Saltash, who is a postman in Plymouth, is now close to completing the seven summits, a world mountaineering challenge.
He said “I felt ecstatic and overcome with emotion when I reached the top, but you don’t celebrate then because you’ve still got to get down. It’s on the way down that most deaths happen”.
Edward completed the feat in aid of the British Heart Foundation, with seven others from across the globe. Much of the 63 day trip to Nepal and Tibet was spent acclimatising to the altitude. He used five bottles of oxygen in total and spent nine hours climbing from camp three to the peak. The seriousness of the feat was quickly brought home when a man in a separate group died attempting the decent at the same time as him. He also climbed with a man who saw the body of a friend who died attempting Mount Everest last year. Ed himself passed eight preserved bodies of previous climbers who had not made it. “You’re already aware of the risks you take but you just think `I just hope that doesn’t happen to me,” he said.
After seeing a newspaper article when he was recovering from a football injury, Ed was inspired to climb. He said “I’d put on weight and saw a piece about climbing Mount Kilimanjaro. I went for it and it carried on from then.
He added that he was lured by the beauty and aura of the mountains and the feeling of remoteness they provided. “The thought of being the first Cornishman on the peak made me feel really proud” he said. The route he took was the North route which is the most dangerous route.
The total amount he has raised so far is £3,200 before the Gift Aid is included. This also includes the £250 provided by Zetland Lodge 1071. Ed isn’t a mason, but his Father is W. Bro. D. W. E. Buckingham, (PPGReg), a member of Zetland Lodge 1071.
On Wednesday 2nd November 2011, the lodge called off and received a lecture by Ed Buckingham about his climb.
Citizenship for Life project visit Helston Freemasons
On Tuesday 6th September 2011 a group of five young people from Helston and Mullion Schools, who are part of a citizenship programme, visited the True and Faithful Freemasons Lodge of Helston.
Citizenship for Life is a project organised by Charlotte Chadwick, the Community Network Manager for Helston and The Lizard, assisted by Helen Jones. Its aims are to encourage by inspirational trips and one to one mentoring, ten year nine students, to have a better understanding of their sense of place in our communities and to become better and more successful citizens.
After an introduction by Helen Jones and Chris Ring, one of the mentors and a member of the Lodge, five of the young people stood up in front of 45 Freemasons and spoke on what that had been involved with over the last years project and what they had achieved.
Robbie Alberry, who had just given a talk on the work of the Royal Masonic Trust for Boys and Girls, commented on how confidently and inspirationally the young people had spoken.
The Freemasons and members of the Citizenship 4 Life project then met informally in the dining hall where they were able to spend some more time talking about the trips and experiences they had had over the last year.
Chris Ring, a member of the Lodge and one of the mentors said "It was a wonderful experience for the young people to meet the members of the Lodge and talk about the project. The Freemasons do not often allow non members into our meetings but we felt that the work that had been achieved by the young people was worth sharing with our members. Several of the members also showed an interest in becoming involved with the project in future years."

update:
Here is a message from UGLE dated 20 July about the proposed suspension of relations by UGLE with the GNLF.
Please note the consequences of such suspension are that:-
“Brethren will no longer be permitted to join or to visit Lodges under the GLNF”
“Our Lodges will no longer be permitted to elect as a joining member or admit as a visitor any Brother who is a subscribing member of a Lodge under the GLNF, unless he is also a subscribing member of a Lodge under UGLE or under a Grand Lodge, other than the GLNF, recognised by UGLE.”
Although the suspension “cannot be achieved until Grand Lodge meets on 14 September”, the Board hopes “you will encourage the Brethren of your Lodges to act in the meantime as though the above restrictions were already in force.”
